چکیده

We present results from ChandraX-ray and Spitzer mid-infrared observations of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 6872/IC 4970 in the Pavo galaxy group and show that the smaller companion galaxy IC 4970 hosts a highly obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). The 0.5Y10 keVX-ray luminosity of the nucleus is variable, increasing by a factor 2.9 to a luminosity of 1:7 ; 10 erg s 1 (bright state) on 100 ks timescales. The X-ray spectrum of the bright state is heavily absorbed (NH 1⁄4 3 ; 1023 cm 2 for power-law models with 1⁄4 1:5Y2:0) and shows a clear 6.4 keV Fe K line with equivalent width of 144Y195 eV. Limits on the diffuse emission in IC 4970 from Chandra X-ray data suggest that the available power from Bondi accretion of IC 4970’s hot interstellar gas may be an order of magnitude too small to power the AGN. Spitzer images show that 8 mnonstellar emission is concentrated in the central 1 kpc of IC 4970, consistent with high obscuration in this region. The mid-infrared colors of the nucleus are consistent with those expected for a highly obscured AGN. Taken together these data suggest that the nucleus of IC 4970 is a Seyfert 2, triggered and fueled by cold material supplied to the central supermassive black hole as a result of the off-axis collision of IC 4970 with the cold-gas-rich spiral galaxy NGC 6872. Subject headinggs: galaxies: active — galaxies: clusters: general — galaxies: individual ( IC 4970) — galaxies: interactions — infrared: galaxies — X-rays: galaxies

Hot and cold gas accretion and feedback in radio - loud active galaxies

We have recently shown that X-ray observations of the population of 'low-excitation' radio galaxies, which includes most low-power, Fanaroff-Riley class I sources as well as some more powerful Fanaroff-Riley class II objects, are consistent with a model in which the active nuclei of these objects are not radiatively efficient at any waveband. In another recent paper Allen et al. have shown that...

Neutral Hydrogen Emission in Nearby X-ray-Selected Active Galaxies

We have searched for neutral hydrogen (H I) in 95 active galaxies using the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope. The sample includes only nearby active galaxies up to 220 Mpc away (redshifts up to 0.05). Our galaxies all contain Seyfert active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected in the hard X-ray (14-195 keV) by the Swift Gamma-ray Burst satellite’s Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) 22-month survey. The hard X...

Does the Radiative Avalanche Fueling Work in Any Active Galactic Nuclei ?

Recently Umemura, Fukue, & Mineshige (1997) proposed the radiative avalanche fueling to active galactic nuclei; gas accretion is driven by radiation drag exerted by stellar radiation from circumnuclear starburst regions. This mechanism is also interesting in terms of starburst-AGN connections. We therefore present observational tests for the radiative avalanche fueling. Our tests, however, show...

Accretion during the merger of supermassive black holes

We study the evolution of disk accretion during the merger of supermassive black hole binaries in galactic nuclei. In hierarchical galaxy formation models, the most common binaries are likely to arise from minor galactic mergers, and have unequal mass black holes. Once such a binary becomes embedded in an accretion disk at a separation a ∼ 0.1 pc, the merger proceeds in two distinct phases. Dur...

Fueling Low-level Agn Activity through the Stochastic Accretion of Cold Gas1

Using a simple description of feedback from black hole growth, we develop an analytic model for the fueling of Seyferts (low-luminosity AGN) and their relation to their host galaxies, Eddington ratio distributions, and cosmological evolution. We derive a solution for the time evolution of accretion rates in a feedback-driven blast wave, applicable to large-scale outflows from bright quasars in ...
